West Greenland kayak
The West Greenland kayak is a short-range hunting kayak that was used primarily for stalking and the pursuit of sea mammals such as seals, walrus and whales. In some parts of Greenland, kayaks are still being used for subsistence hunting. This type of kayak sits low in the water, is very fast and maneuverable and rolls beautifully. The West Greenland kayak is an ocean going boat suited for somewhat protected waters such as fiords and inlets.
For the past three years, I've been paddling a 17 long West Greenlander with a 22 1/2" beam and a depth of 5 3/4". It's been my own favorite kayak to paddle for fun. The West Greenland kayak described in Building Skin-on-Frame Boats, is this very boat. It's fast, turns well and is stable enough that I'm confident loaning it out to novice paddlers. I've also just built a 20" wide version to practice rolling. Sweet!
